About the Artist

Lillian Clinard - Biography

Creating Magic With Watercolor

Lil was born in historic Greeneville, Tennessee in the Appalachian Mountains. As a child, she enjoyed drawing and painting and was encouraged by her family. However, art was not her chosen field of study. She earned a BS, MS and PhD in science and environmental studies and worked in government and private research and technical management for 30 years. This work took her to Asia, Africa, Europe, Mexico and Canada, as well as, across the United States.

Through all these years, Lil visited art museums and cultural centers and photographed many beautiful and exciting places. In 2007, after retirement, Lil began her quest to become an artist and to depict the wonderful scenes she had enjoyed around the world. She took art classes and workshops with renowned watercolor artists. She began to paint in earnest, teaching herself through practice. In 2008, she began to exhibit and was encouraged by awards and sales of her artwork. Today, she considers herself a professional artist with clients across the United States both private and corporate collectors. She is active in several art organizations including the National Watercolor Society and American Watercolor Society.

Lil’s paintings are representational inspired by her photography. She searches her thousands of photographs for interesting light and shadow patterns. It is like revisiting each scene and enjoying it all again. She paints primarily landscapes with a nod to impressionism. She is always drawn to sparkling light and water. This has inspired a series of paintings of waterfalls from her native East Tennessee and the Smoky Mountains.

Lil currently lives and paints in the lakeside community of Tellico Village at the base of the Smoky Mountains. Her work is available through her website, her studio and the Art Market Gallery in Knoxville, Tennessee.
